The process of breaking down organic waste is that the anaerobic (don’t need oxygen) bacteria break down the solid waste into various compounds including ammonia, methane, hydrogen sulphides (all the smelly ones) and about 200 other compounds.

Aerobic (need oxygen) then break these compounds down into usable nutrients and minerals ready for the plants to uptake thereby completing nature’s cycle.

Facultative bacteria are ones that like oxygen if they can get it and act as aerobic bacteria or will act as anaerobic bacteria when oxygen is not readily available.​
